University Physician's Office
Project List
Updated: 1/16/08
Since the creation of our department in 1998, the University Physician's Office has conceived and participated in a number of IT related and special projects. These projects included several campus initiatives. Read on for information about some of our on-going health- and safety-related initiatives.
Healthy E-Mail Service
The Healthy E-mail Service evolved from a Michigan State University research project, which ran from July 2000 through July 2005. The Healthy E-mail Project examined whether or not sending patients and providers the same information at the same time was helpful in the delivery of healthcare. Please visit the
Survey Results page to view the final Consumer and Provider Survey Results from the research project.
The new Healthy E-mail Service delivers weekly patient-oriented, evidence-based medical information from high-quality studies on numerous and varied topics to both consumers and healthcare providers. To learn more about the criteria used to review the studies and create the messages visit the Criteria page.
Health4U Program Registration System
Information listed in 2008.
HERD (Healthy Employee Risk Database)
The Healthy Employee Risk Database (HERD) assists Occupational Health in tracking the health risks and related requirements of all faculty, staff, and students on campus. The risk information may be derived from the HASP (Health and Safety Program) website or it may be a custom health risk someone on the U-Phys staff has added. After an appointment a University Physician's Office staff member updates the compliance and immunization information for an individual. A few University Physician's Office staff members may pull reports describing compliance, next visit dates, and populations in risk categories for one or more departments and risks. (Go to the HERD Web site)
Immunization Project
In 1999, prompted by newly updated federal recommendations for college-age immunizations, the University Physician's Office began a program to educate MSU students about vaccine-preventable illnesses, encourage vaccination, and and require students to report their immunization history. Read more
International Tuberculosis Database
The International Student TB Database is used to assist the University Physician’s Office and Occupational Health in monitoring international students for tuberculosis. It also assists in providing compliance data to aid in taking measures to encourage compliance (such as emails or placing holds) and generating statistics.
Student Health Professions Needlestick Project
Coordinating with many other offices on campus, including MSU's health professions' colleges and departments, the University Physician's Office helped develop a coherent consistent policy to address the screening, exposure protocols, and response to health professions students when they encounter a "needlestick." This project also includes a Web site and toll-free telephone number for reporting exposures. Find more information on-line at http://uphys.msu.edu/forstudents/needlestick/index.htm.
Travel 2006 Video
The Travel video is instrumental in educating travelers, mainly that travel abroad, on travel preparation, risks while traveling, and returning home.
